Free tool · no sign-up

Second and third date generator

Tell it what you did on the first date. Each idea builds on what you already know about each other.

What was the first date?
Which date are you planning?
  1. You talked over drinks; now do something together. Mini golf, bowling or a climbing session, then food.

  2. Cook dinner at your place, with a clear plan and an easy exit.

  3. A comedy show and a late drink after.

  4. A walk through a market or a festival, grazing on food as you go.

12 in this set

Plan the second date within a week of the first, and change the format: if you talked over drinks, do something; if you did something, sit and talk. By the third date, add a little more time and something personal.

What makes a good second date?

A change of format and a callback to date one. If you talked over drinks, do something together; if you did something active, sit somewhere quieter and talk. Then build on what you learned: the restaurant she mentioned, the exhibit she wanted to see.

Callbacks show you listened, and familiarity does the rest. In live interaction experiments, the more two people interacted, the more they liked each other, mainly because they felt understood and comfortable. A second date that picks up her stories speeds that up.

How is a third date different?

A bit longer, a bit more personal. Third dates often move into daytime plans, cooking together, or meeting a friend or two. You’re checking whether you fit into each other’s real lives, not just a bar.

New experiences help here too. Couples who did a novel, mildly exciting activity together reported bigger gains in relationship quality than couples who did something routine. A day trip or a class beats another round of the same bar.

How do you go deeper without rushing?

Share a little more yourself, and let her match your pace. By the second or third date, plans, friendships and what you each want are fair topics.

Don’t hunt for things in common like a checklist. In get-acquainted studies, perceived similarity was strongly tied to liking, and the evidence pointed to liking coming first: people who enjoy each other start to feel alike. Focus on enjoying the date and the common ground follows.

When should you ask for the next date?

At the end of a good one, or the next day. Name a specific plan, as you did the first time. If it’s going well, the situationship vs relationship quiz helps you read where you stand, and the Situation Finder has the first move. For seasonal plans, see the fall and winter date generators. For the first date, see the first date idea generator, and for conversation, the first date question generator.

Questions men ask

How soon should the second date be?

Within about a week of the first. Longer gaps let momentum fade, especially if you’re both talking to other people.

What should a second date be like?

Different from the first. If you talked over drinks, do something together. If you did an activity, sit down somewhere quieter and talk.

Is it okay to invite her to my place on the third date?

If you’ve both clearly enjoyed the first two dates, a cooked dinner can be a good third date. Make the plan clear, and make it easy for her to say no or leave.

What do people talk about on a second date?

Pick up threads from the first date, then go a little deeper: plans, friends, what matters to each of you. You already know the basics.
