Pick a budget and a vibe. Every idea keeps the date short, lets you talk, and makes it easy to extend if it’s going well.

  1. Browse a used bookstore and pick a book for each other under $5.

  2. Farmers market on Saturday morning: each of you buys one thing the other has never tried.

  3. Mini golf or a retro arcade, then a drink nearby.

What makes a good first date?

Short, easy to talk through, and a little bit fun. Aim for 60 to 90 minutes somewhere you can hear each other, with an easy way to extend it if things are going well: a second drink, a walk, dessert down the street.

Doing something new together helps. In experiments, couples who spent just seven minutes on a novel, slightly exciting task reported bigger gains in relationship quality than couples given a mundane one. You don’t need skydiving; trivia, mini golf or a neighborhood neither of you knows is enough.

Should a first date be active or calm?

A little of both works best. A pure activity leaves no time to talk; a pure sit-down puts all the pressure on conversation. The sweet spot is something light to do, followed by somewhere to sit.

A touch of excitement can even help. In the classic bridge study, men approached by a woman on a fear-arousing suspension bridge were more likely to contact her afterwards than men approached on a solid bridge. A climbing session or a comedy show gives you a mild version of that.

How do you ask her on a specific date?

Name the idea, a day and a time. “There’s trivia at the Fox on Thursday at 7. Want to be my teammate?” is easy to say yes to. “What do you want to do?” makes her plan your date. If you need the words, see how to ask her out over text.

What should you plan for the conversation?

Nothing scripted, but have a few good questions ready. The first date question generator helps. Pick a place you already know, so you can lead without worrying about logistics, and arrive a few minutes early.

When it goes well, the second date generator builds on it. For seasonal plans, try the fall date ideas or winter date ideas. After the date, the what to text after a first date generator has the message. The Situation Finder has the first move for choosing a place.

Questions men ask

What is a good first date?

Something short, easy to talk through, and a little fun: drinks somewhere quiet, a walk with coffee, trivia or mini golf. Plan 60 to 90 minutes with an easy way to extend.

Is dinner a bad first date?

Not bad, just heavy. A long dinner locks you in for two hours with someone you barely know. Save it for the second or third date.

Who should pay on a first date?

If you asked, offer to pay without making it a statement. If she insists on splitting, let her. What matters more is that the plan was yours.

Should the first date be during the day or at night?

Either works. Daytime feels lower pressure and safer for her; an evening drink feels more clearly like a date. Pick what suits the plan.
