Should you text your ex?
Usually not, with two exceptions. Practical messages (returning things, bills, a shared pet) are fine. And a short, kind message after a long time, like a birthday line you’d be fine never hearing back about, can be okay. Texts sent because you miss her, want closure, or have been drinking usually make things worse.
The tool asks why you want to text, whether she asked for space, how long it’s been and what you’re hoping for, then gives you a clear answer.

Why does contact make it harder to move on?
Because each exchange restarts the hope. Research on breakups notes that continuing contact with an ex can disrupt emotional recovery, and checking up on an ex online went with more distress and longing and less personal growth.
Recovery is mostly about rebuilding who you are without her. In a study of recently separated young adults, those who reflected on the breakup more often regained a clearer sense of self, which explained drops in intrusive feelings and loneliness. A text to her rarely helps with that.
What should you send if the answer is yes?
Something short that asks for nothing. For logistics, one clear message with a plan. For a birthday, one line with no question. Then let it go.

What if you just miss her?
Write the message in your notes app, wait a day, and talk to a friend instead. The urge passes faster than it feels like it will.
It also helps to plan for the moments that trigger it: late nights, her birthday, the song you both liked. Decide in advance what you’ll do instead, like calling a friend, going for a run or going to bed, so the decision is already made when the urge hits.
Wondering whether she’ll come back? The Will she come back? quiz gives you an honest read. If seeing her online hurts, Should I block my ex? helps. The Situation Finder has the first move.
Questions men ask
Should I text my ex happy birthday?
Only if it’s been a while, she hasn’t asked for space, and you’ll be fine if she doesn’t reply. Keep it to one line with no questions.
Is it okay to text my ex when I miss her?
Usually not. Missing her is normal, but a text sent from that feeling tends to reopen things for both of you. Write it down instead and wait.
How long should I wait before texting my ex?
At least a month after the breakup for anything non-practical, and longer if it was painful. If she asked for no contact, respect that.
What if she texts me first?
Reply kindly and briefly, and notice how you feel. You don’t owe her a long conversation. If it stirs things up, it’s fine to keep your distance.
