What makes a good date night?
Doing something new together. Dinner at the usual place and a show on the couch are fine, but the date nights that bring couples closer involve a little novelty: a class, a new neighborhood, a dish neither of you has cooked.
The research is unusually clear here. In a randomized trial, couples who spent 90 minutes a week on shared exciting activities for four weeks reported more excitement, more positive feelings and higher relationship satisfaction, and the gains were still there four months later.

Why does novelty matter so much?
Because routine is what dulls relationships. In lab experiments, couples who did a novel, mildly arousing task together for just seven minutes reported bigger gains in relationship quality than couples who did something mundane. Boredom, the researchers found, explained much of the link.
You don’t need to skydive. Trying a new restaurant, learning a dance, or playing a game neither of you knows counts.
How do you make date night a habit?
Put it on the calendar, take turns planning, and protect it like any other appointment. A short weekly date beats an elaborate monthly one.
Keep a shared list of ideas on your phones, and add to it whenever one of you sees something interesting. When date night comes around, you pick from the list instead of defaulting to the same restaurant. The generator above is a good place to start that list.

What about the conversation?
Leave the phones out and ask real questions. The would you rather generator for couples is an easy way in. Say thank you for something specific, too; small acts of appreciation are among the strongest predictors of a happy relationship.

Questions men ask
How often should couples have a date night?
Once a week is a good target, even if it’s a short one at home. Regularity matters more than how elaborate it is.
What are good date night ideas at home?
Cooking a dish neither of you has made, a board game tournament, a blanket-fort movie night, or recreating your first date. The key is doing something together, not just watching TV side by side.
How do we keep date nights from getting boring?
Take turns planning and pick things that are new to both of you. Novelty is what keeps date night feeling like a date.
What if we can’t afford date nights?
Plenty of the best ones are free: walks somewhere new, stargazing, picnics, game nights. Attention matters far more than money.
