Why is your girlfriend being mean to you?
Usually one of four things: stress in her life spilling over onto the person closest to her, an issue she feels you keep ignoring, a short fuse that’s always been there, or contempt. Each needs a different response, which is why the diagnostic asks when it started and what it looks like.
And if there’s violence, threats or control over your money or friends, that’s abuse. The tool checks that first.

What if it started recently?
Look outside the relationship first. A sudden change that lines up with pressure at work, family trouble or health worries is often stress landing on the safest target. Ask about her, not about the snapping, and listen before you defend yourself.
If there’s an issue she keeps raising, the anger is often about not being heard. Bringing it up yourself, and agreeing on one real change, usually lowers the temperature faster than anything else.
When is it more than a bad patch?
When it’s contempt. Regular mockery, eye-rolling and put-downs are different from a short temper. The Gottman Institute calls contempt the single greatest predictor of divorce. It needs a clear conversation and, if it continues, couples counseling or a decision about staying.
Men experience partner abuse too: CDC data show about 1 in 7 men in the US has experienced physical violence from an intimate partner. The National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) helps men as well.

How do you bring it up without a fight?
Pick a calm moment, describe what happened without labels, and say how it affected you. “When you snapped at me in front of your sister, it really stung” works better than “you’re always mean.” Then ask what’s going on for her.
For a fair look at the whole relationship, try the red flag checklist. If you’re wondering whether to stay, the should I break up quiz helps. The Situation Finder has the first move for the fight you keep having.
Questions men ask
Why does my girlfriend get angry at me for no reason?
There’s usually a reason, just not an obvious one: stress elsewhere in her life, an issue she feels you keep ignoring, or exhaustion. Ask calmly and listen before defending yourself.
Is it normal for my girlfriend to yell at me?
Occasional raised voices in a heated argument happen in many relationships. Regular yelling, insults or fear of her reaction are not normal and need to be addressed.
What should I say when she’s being mean?
Stay calm and name it without attacking: “I want to hear what’s wrong, but I can’t when you talk to me like that.” Then pick the conversation up when you’re both calm.
Can a girlfriend be abusive?
Yes. Violence, threats, or control over your money or friendships are abuse whoever does them. The National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) serves men too.
