When should you propose?

When you both want marriage, you’ve agreed on the big things, you’ve handled a hard time together, and you know each other’s people. Time matters less than those four conversations, though many couples like to have at least a year together first.

The calculator counts those conversations and your months together, then tells you whether to talk first, wait a bit, or start planning.

Why talk before you propose?

Because a proposal should confirm a decision, not create one. Research on commitment transitions warns about sliding into big steps instead of deciding them, which builds inertia regardless of fit. Talking about marriage first means you both choose it.

The same applies to living together. A survey of recently married people found that couples who moved in together after getting engaged did as well as those who waited until marriage, while moving in before engagement went with slightly lower marital quality. Deciding first is what matters.

Does the ring matter?

Less than you’ve been told. In a survey of more than 3,000 ever-married Americans, spending on the engagement ring and wedding was associated with shorter marriages, after controlling for other factors. That doesn’t mean a cheap ring saves a marriage; it means debt and display don’t help.

How do you plan the moment?

Make it about her, not about the video. Somewhere meaningful to you both, a few honest words, and a ring you can afford comfortably. Ask her family’s blessing if that matters to her. And think about privacy: some people love a public proposal, many would rather it were just the two of you. You know which she is; if you don’t, that’s worth finding out first.

Questions men ask

How long should you date before getting engaged?

There’s no magic number. Many couples wait at least a year so they’ve seen real life together. What matters more is whether you’ve both said you want marriage and agreed on the big things.

Should a proposal be a surprise?

The moment can be. The decision shouldn’t be. Most couples talk about marriage, and even rough timing, before the proposal.

What should we agree on before getting engaged?

Whether you both want kids, how you’ll handle money, where you want to live, and how you handle conflict. These are the conversations that make a marriage easier.

How much should I spend on the ring?

Less than ads suggest. One large survey found that higher spending on the ring and wedding went with shorter marriages. Spend what you can afford comfortably.
