How much should you spend on an engagement ring?

What you can pay in cash, without debt, and without emptying your emergency fund. For most people that comes to about a month of take-home pay or less. The calculator shows that number next to the old advertising rule and the real average, so you can see how far apart they are.

The “two months’ salary” rule isn’t tradition. It came from diamond advertising: De Beers ads first suggested a month’s salary and, by the 1980s, two months’. It was a sales line that stuck.

What do people actually spend?

Less than the ads imply. The Knot’s study of more than 10,000 couples married in 2025 found an average ring spend of $4,600, down from $5,200 a year earlier, with 61% choosing a lab-grown center stone. Prices are falling as tastes shift.

Does spending more mean a stronger marriage?

No, if anything the opposite. In a survey of more than 3,000 ever-married Americans, spending on the engagement ring and wedding was associated with shorter marriages, even after accounting for income and other factors. It doesn’t mean a cheap ring protects you; it suggests that debt and display don’t help.

How do you get the most for your budget?

Prioritize her taste over carat size. Find out what she likes through a friend or her saved photos, consider lab-grown, and put more into a well-made setting than a bigger stone. A ring she loves on a budget you’re comfortable with beats an expensive one you’re still paying off.

If you’re short on savings, there’s no rule that the ring must come first. Some men propose with a simple stand-in and choose the real ring together; others propose with a family ring. What she’ll remember is the moment, not the receipt.

Planning the moment and the next steps? Moving in together often comes up around the same time. Not sure it’s time yet? The when to propose calculator checks the big conversations first, and Is she the one? looks at what predicts lasting couples.
