When should you move in together?
When you’re deciding to, not sliding into it. Good signs: you want to build a life together, you’ve talked about what moving in means for your future, you’ve agreed on money and chores, and you’ve already spent long stretches together that went well. Bad signs: the main reason is a lease ending or saving rent.
The difference matters. Researchers describe how couples who slide into living together build up inertia that can keep them together regardless of how well they fit.

Does moving in before marriage hurt?
Only in a specific way. In a survey of 1,050 recently married people, those who lived together before getting engaged reported somewhat lower marital satisfaction and more negative communication than those who moved in after engagement or after marriage. The differences were small, and there was no gap between moving in after engagement and waiting until marriage.
The lesson isn’t “never live together.” It’s to make the commitment decision first, together and out loud.
What should you talk about first?
Four things: what moving in means for the future, how you’ll split money, how you’ll share chores, and what happens if it doesn’t work. These conversations feel unromantic, and they save a lot of fights. Be specific: who pays what, what “clean” means to each of you, how often friends can stay over, and how you’ll handle it if one of you loses a job.

What if one of you isn't ready?
Then wait, and keep talking. Pushing someone into living together rarely ends well. Spend longer stretches at each other’s places and revisit it in a few months.

Questions men ask
How long should you date before moving in together?
There’s no fixed number, but most couples benefit from at least a year and some real time living together on trips or long stays. The reasons and conversations matter more than the months.
Is moving in together to save money a bad idea?
Not if it’s one reason among others. If it’s the main reason, you risk ending up in a commitment you didn’t really choose.
What should we talk about before moving in?
What moving in means for your future, how you’ll split rent and bills, chores and cleanliness, guests, and what happens to the lease if it doesn’t work out.
Does living together before marriage lead to divorce?
Research finds a small link for couples who moved in before getting engaged, but not for those who moved in after deciding to marry. Deciding together seems to be what matters.
