How do you know if you're ready for a relationship?
Four things line up. You want a relationship for its own sake rather than to escape something. You have time and energy to give someone. Your life is steady enough to share. And you’re not still living in your last relationship.
Readiness is a real thing that researchers measure. Across five samples of single people, those who felt ready for commitment were more interested in a relationship, pursued one more actively, and were later more likely to enter one, and more committed once they did.

Why do your reasons matter so much?
Because they decide who you choose. If you want a relationship mostly to stop feeling lonely or behind, almost anyone can seem like the answer, and you’re more likely to stay in something that doesn’t fit.
Relationships that last are built on more than relief. Research on commitment finds that satisfaction, investment and the quality of alternatives together explained nearly two-thirds of how committed people were. You can’t invest well when you’re mainly trying to escape.
What if you're still thinking about your ex?
Then you’re probably not ready yet, and that’s normal. Dating while you still think about her most days tends to mean comparing everyone to her, or using someone to forget.

What should you do if you're not ready?
Build the life you’d want to share. Spend a few months on your health, your work and your friendships, and date lightly if at all. You’ll choose better from there.
It doesn’t mean shutting the door. If you meet someone great, be honest about where you are and go slowly. Readiness isn’t a switch; it grows as the rest of your life settles.

Questions men ask
How do I know if I’m ready for a relationship?
You want one for the right reasons, you have room in your life for someone, your life is fairly stable, and you’re not still caught up in an ex.
Is it bad to want a relationship because I’m lonely?
Loneliness is a normal reason to want connection, but it’s a shaky foundation on its own. Build friendships too, so a partner adds to your life instead of rescuing it.
How long should I wait after a breakup to date again?
There’s no set time. A good sign is when you can think about your ex without a strong pull, and you’re curious about someone new for who she is.
Can I be ready and still be scared?
Yes. Nerves are normal. Readiness is about wanting it for good reasons and having room for it, not about feeling fearless.
