Is she cheating?
Look for several changes at once that have no other explanation: new secrecy with her phone, unexplained absences, stories that don’t add up, a sharp drop in affection. One sign alone means very little. Stress, a new job or a rough patch can explain most of them.
Cheating is also less common than anxious minds suggest. Analysis of General Social Survey data found that 13% of married women and 20% of married men reported having had sex with someone other than their spouse while married.

Can you tell if she's lying?
Not reliably. A meta-analysis of 206 studies found that people judging lies in real time are right only 54% of the time, barely better than a coin flip. Reading guilt into her face or tone is mostly guesswork.
That’s why the checklist looks at changes in behavior over time instead of “tells,” and why a direct conversation beats detective work. People also tend to see their partners as honest by default, which is why a sudden, specific change stands out more than any single look or pause.
Should you snoop?
Usually not. If you find nothing, the doubt doesn’t go away, and if you find something, the conversation begins with what you did. Snooping also damages trust even when she’s done nothing wrong. If she later finds out you went through her phone, you’ll have created the very breach of trust you were afraid of.

How do you bring it up?
Calmly, at a quiet moment, with specifics. Describe what you’ve noticed and how it’s affecting you, then ask what’s going on. You’ll learn more from her answer, and how she gives it, than from her phone.

Questions men ask
What are the signs your girlfriend is cheating?
New secrecy with her phone, unexplained absences, stories that don’t add up and a sharp drop in affection, especially several at once with no other explanation. None of them is proof on its own.
Should I go through her phone?
Usually not. If you find nothing, the mistrust remains; if you find something, the conversation starts with your snooping. Talk to her directly first.
How do I ask her if she’s cheating?
Describe what you’ve noticed and how it’s affecting you, then ask what’s going on. Accusations make people defensive; specific observations invite honesty.
How common is cheating?
Less common than people fear. In US survey data, about 13% of married women report ever having had sex with someone other than their spouse while married.
