How many dates before a relationship?
There’s no official number, but a useful rule of thumb is about five dates over about a month, with steady contact in between. By then you both know enough to answer honestly. Under three dates is usually too early to push; past three months without a conversation is overdue.
The calculator applies that rule and tells you where you are. It’s a rule of thumb, not a research finding, and the method note says exactly how it works.

Why does time together matter more than the number?
Because closeness grows with real interaction. In live experiments, the more two people interacted, the more they liked each other, mostly because they felt understood and comfortable. Five long dates in two weeks can teach you more than eight quick drinks over three months.
That’s why the calculator looks at weeks and contact as well as dates. Watch for the signs that matter more than any count: she makes plans too, she introduces you to friends, and she talks about things you’ll do together next month.
What if you wait too long?
The relationship can slide into a situationship. Researchers describe how sliding through relationship transitions instead of deciding them creates inertia that keeps people together whether or not it’s a good fit. Having the talk is how you decide.

How do you bring it up?
In person, calmly, with no ultimatum. Pick a relaxed moment, not the end of a long night or the middle of an argument. Say what you want, then ask what she wants: “I like where this is going and I’m not seeing anyone else. I’d like us to be exclusive. How do you feel?”

Questions men ask
How many dates before you’re official?
There’s no fixed number. As a rule of thumb, around five dates over a month or so, with steady contact, is when most people can reasonably talk about exclusivity.
How long should the talking stage last?
A few weeks to a couple of months. Past three months without a conversation, the ambiguity usually starts to cost more than asking would.
Who should bring up the relationship talk?
Whoever wants clarity. If that’s you, bring it up calmly in person. Waiting for her to go first can leave you both waiting.
Is it too soon to ask after three dates?
Often, yes. Three dates is usually still the getting-to-know-you stage. Unless you’re seeing each other very often, give it a few more.
