What does half your age plus seven mean?

It’s a rule of thumb for the youngest partner most people consider socially acceptable: divide your age by two and add seven. A 30-year-old gets 22. Reversed (subtract seven, then double), it gives the oldest: 46 for a 30-year-old. The calculator does both and checks a specific gap if you add one.

It’s a social rule, not a scientific one. Nobody derived it from data. It survives because it’s easy to remember and roughly matches what many people find comfortable.

Does the rule match real preferences?

Loosely. Research on age preferences across personal ads and marriage records in several countries found that men’s preference for younger partners grows more pronounced as they age, while young women tend to prefer somewhat older men and change less over time. The rule captures that drift in a single formula, but real preferences vary a lot from person to person.

Do age-gap relationships work?

They can. In a study of women in heterosexual relationships, couples where the woman was older reported the most satisfaction and commitment, compared with woman-younger and similar-age couples. An age gap on its own isn’t a sign of trouble.

What matters more is what the gap brings with it. A big difference in life stage (one of you settling down, the other just starting out) creates friction. So does a power imbalance in money, career or experience.

What should you ask instead of the number?

Three questions do more than any formula. Do you want similar things in the next five years? Do you treat each other as equals? And would you both be comfortable explaining the relationship to the people you love?

Questions men ask

What is the half your age plus seven rule?

A rule of thumb for the youngest person it’s socially acceptable to date: divide your age by two and add seven. Reversed, it gives the oldest: subtract seven and double it.

Is the half your age plus seven rule accurate?

It’s a rough social marker, not a scientific finding. It roughly matches what many people find comfortable, but it says nothing about whether a particular couple will work.

Do age-gap relationships last?

Some do, some don’t. Research suggests age-gap couples can be as committed as same-age couples. Life stage, power and shared goals matter more than the number.

What’s the minimum age for a 25-year-old?

By the rule, 25 divided by 2 is 12.5, plus 7 is 19.5, so 20 when rounded up. The oldest is (25 − 7) × 2 = 36.
